"Atypical Depression , Fours Feel that, They have a secret self that no one knows"

The Spiritual Dimension of the Enneagram: Nine Faces of the Soul
by Sandra Maitri

Sandra Maitri's "The Spiritual Dimension of the Enneagram" is, without doubt, the most insightful and meaningful book on the nine temperaments, but caution potential readers that this is not a "beach read" and is best suited as reading for those who are seriously ready to take a deeper look at their own psycho-spiritual essence and soul. This is not a pop-psychology "personality typing" book, but rather a valuable guide for people on their journey of self-discovery, transformation and self-realization.

The book DOES touch on the Nine Temperaments of the enneagram in the personality type" context most people know it, and it covers the psychological aspects of the different types. The majority of "The Spiritual Dimension of the Enneagram" is dedicated to a thorough discussion of each of the nine temperaments, examining the way each has "lost touch" with its essence or "Holy Idea;" describing the psychological and environmental circumstances for these losses, and then offering guidance on how to recover the part of the self that has been lost.

The term "sprituality" by no means makes this a "religious" book. Instead, it is a book about understanding and healing our souls, regardless of religious orientation.

The study of the Nine Temperaments is called the Enneagram and is described in the free ebook listed above. The Enneagram types (Temperaments) are not made up of lists of character traits, but are founded in a person's core values. Each Temperament represents what that person considers something very important to their life such as power, security, harmony, knowledge, fulfillment, i.e.

Your Temperament enables you to make a valuable contributions to your life; but it also causes you to neglect other values, creating a psychological ‘blind spot” for you.

This is why, if you:

“KEEP DOING WHAT YOU BEEN DOING, YOU WILL CONTINUE TO GET WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN GETTING.”

Atypical Depression
Andrew Bicknell

Atypical depression, a subtype of major depression, is the most common form of depression today.

People who suffer atypical depression exhibit all the normal symptoms of depression but they also react to external positive experiences in a positive way. Atypical depression sufferers respond to their environment, enjoying the company of friends but slipping back into deep depression when alone or faced with a stressful situation. It is this aspect of atypical depression that differentiates it from melancholic depression in which external positive experiences still result in depressed feelings.

* Leaden paralysis of the arms and legs

* Long term pattern of sensitivity to rejection in personal situations that causes social or work related withdrawal.

In 1998 Dr. Andrew A. Nierenberg, associate director of the depression clinical and research program at Massachusetts General Hospital, published a study that found 42% of participants suffered from atypical depression, 12% had melancholic depression, 14% had both depression subtypes and the remaining did not suffer from depression.

Studies have also found that atypical depression begins earlier in a person's life than other forms of depression with most sufferers beginning to show symptoms in their teenage years. Those who suffer from atypical depression are also at greater risk of suffering from other mental disorders such as social phobias, avoidant personality disorder or body dysmorphic disorder. Atypical depression is more prevalent in females than males as well, with nearly 70% of it's sufferers being women.

Treating atypical depression is an ongoing process. Research has shown that MAOIs such as Nardil or Parnate work reasonably well as do the newer SSRI medications (Lexapro, Prozac, Zoloft). Most patients prefer the SSRIs because they do not exhibit the unpleasant side affects of the MAOIs.

It is also important that if you or someone you know suffers from atypical depression that you or they seek psychiatric help. Atypical depression is not easy to diagnose the treatment choices can vary from patient to patient. A general care practitioner does not have the expertise to differentiate between the subtypes of depression and may not know the best course of treatment for their patient.

Andrew Bicknell is a writer and Webmaster of Depression and You.com. Visit his website for more information about Atypical Depression and other depression disorders.
